Knowledge & You

Knowledge is process that happens over time, it is a justified, true belief according to the tripartite definition. This definition is specifically linked to knowledge in a propositional sense which means the proposition must be true, justified and believed in by someone.

A Little More Knowledge for you
  • Known, known= Knowledge
  • Known, unknown= Belief
  • Unknown, unknown= Unknowledgeable

Impersonal Propositional Knowledge= Knowledge by description.
Personal Knowledge= Knowledge by conviction
Knowledge by introspection (self-examination)
Knowledge by acquaintance
Knowledge by practice
Subconscious Knowledge= knowledge by instinct
To be in The Know
One must have a way of knowing and an area of knowledge in order to be a “knower”

Ways of knowing (WOK)
  • Emotions
  • Reasoning
  • Perception of senses
  • Language
  • Experience
  • Authority
  • Logic

Areas Of Knowing (AOK)
  • Natural Science
  • History
  • Art
  • Mathematics
  • Ethics

Paradigm: A conceptual system for understanding experience, they are made by concepts in order to assist us in organizing experiences. such as mathematics orhistory.

Justification
A justification is when you appeal to something other than what is being supported in order to “justify” your original point.
It must…:
  • … be relevant and true
  • …Have clear language
  • … respect the principals of logic
There are three theories that can be used to justify truth, these are the:
  • Correspondence theory- comparing with facts of senses, experience and logic
  • Coherence theory- Truth Lies within the P.I.E test.
  • Pragmatic theory – Your personal thoughts, what you know that justifies your belief

PIE TEST- Public, Independent and Eternal
P= everyone has access to the knowledge claim. Is it true to the society?
I= Independent access to the claim. Is it true to you?
E= will it always be true?
If all three are answered by a yes then it is a universal truth ( e.g. the earth orbits the sun), it is true no matter where you go.

Knowledge claim
This is someone’s point of view and this naturally brings up discussion.
A few things to keep in mind when knowledge becomes the issue:
  • Does the issue contain problematic concepts?
  • What assumptions r being made?
  • What WOK are involved?
  • To what AOK does the claim belong?
  • Is the knowledge claim cultural bound?
  • What knowledge issues does the claim involve?
  • What counter claims can be made?
What are YOUR views on the claim?
